Desktop Earth - The Earth on Your Desktop in Real Time

Desktop Earth is a wallpaper generator for Windows. It runs whenever you're logged on and updates your wallpaper with an accurate representation of the Earth as it would be seen from space at that precise moment.

Day and night is accurately represented depending on the Sun's overhead position (which depends on both the time of day and the day of the year) and both the snow cover and the foliage changes with the seasons.

Images are created from high-resolution textures (2560x1280) so it's perfect for that QSXGA display.

An image is generated every month to accurately depict snow and foliage changes, and the night view is simply stunning.

If you just want to stick with one view of the earth, there is a huge stash of wallpapers in the install directory that can be used permanently without being online or having Desktop Earth installed.

Download Microsoft SharePoint Designer Free

SharePoint Designer is Microsoft's WYSIWYG HTML editor and general web design program that replaced Microsoft FrontPage.

When SharePoint Designer replaced Front Page, Microsoft changed the HTML rendering engine to one that is more standards compliant - making it easier to design web pages that are readable in most browsers.

You can get more information and the download link at the SharePoint Designer home page.
There's also a Q and A from Microsoft, a letter to customers, and links to quite a bit of training material - web casts, demos, including a six part beginners series for beginners, sample pages and templates for use with SharePoint Designer.

Although they share a similar name (SharePoint), this is not the SharePoint Server program.
On a similar note, if you decide to download SharePoint Designer, you may also want to download Service Pack 1 (SP1) for SharePoint Designer 2007 (link below)

Download requirements:
You'll need a Microsoft Passport, MSN Hotmail, MSN Messenger, or Windows Live ID account to download SharePoint Designer if you don't already have one. Registration is free if you decide to create an account.

Free Utility Speeds Up Vista

Experienced users are well aware that you can improve the performance of all versions of Windows by shutting down non essential Windows services. Indeed whole web sites such as Black Viper (http://www.blackviper.com/) are dedicated to the subject.

Of all the versions of Windows, Vista shows the greatest gain from shutting down non essential services. That because it has so many er, non essential components. OK then, so many useless components.

Unfortunately shutting down services is not a task for the faint hearted. First it's hard to work out what services you don't need. Secondly it's quite a fiddly job to actually shut them down and finally and most importantly, things can go wrong like when you discover that one of your favorite programs actually uses one of those "non essential" services.

Vista Services Optimizer is a nifty free utility that let you shut down unneeded services without the pain. There are several features about it that I really like:

1. It has an automatic TuneUp option that allows inexperienced users to shut down useless services. Furthermore it does this is a smart way. Rather than just taking a best guess what users don't need it asks simple plain English questions about what you do on your computer before it decides what you don't need.

2. Advanced users have plenty of options to fine tune their needs including the ability to create multiple service profiles.

3. It has smart Rescue Center that allows you to restart your shut down services should something go wrong.

On my tests it ran fine and after a bit of manual tweaking I realized some significant performance gains on my Vista PC. The only downside, apart from the usual risk of stopping a service that was actually needed, was the fact that the product requires the .NET 3 framework to be installed on your PC. Still, many modern Vista systems come with that pre-installed.

There is much to like here and if you use Vista I suggest you give it a whirl. However just to be extra careful I suggest you create a full systen backup or create a system checkpoint before you start, in case you have a disaster. Sure Vista Services Optimizer has its own recovery mechanism but in my books, two backup recovery options are better than one.

Download is 1.85MB, .NET 3 required, works with Vista 32 and 64 bit.

Free Avira AntiVir V9 Released - Now Includes AntiSpyware

Avira have just released the latest version 9 of their class leading AntiVir program.

The big news is the free version now includes anti-spyware capabilities, a feature previously only available in paid versions.

This is breaking news and we have have not yet tested the new free version. However if it is as good as the previous version AND has anti-malware capabilities then it's going to be a winner.

How to Stop Vista Objecting to Programs at Startup

Oh the joys of Vista.

One of its many "charming" characteristics is that it will fail at startup to run certain utilities you have installed.

It does this for your protection but when you have deliberately and consciously installed a program and it won't run, it is a total pain.

The classic example is the wonderful free "Everything" search program. After you install "Everything" Vista will simply not automatically run the program at startup. Instead it issues a warning message. The only way to start the program is to do it manually.

However Mark Wittels, one of our regular site vistors, has found a way of getting around the problem. Here's what he suggests:

Often, when you use a third party program in Vista such as "Everything" or "Secunia PSI" which is set to start on boot, Vista's user account control' (UAC) will block the program because it can't get a response from you to elevate access privileges. This requires you to unblock the program in response to an information balloon that appears.

The simple way to avoid this annoyance is to use Vista's "Task Scheduler" to start the program.

1. Stop the program from running at startup

You can do this by using the "Options" or "Settings" dialog in the program you have installed and unchecking the appropriate box. If this is not available (some software uses the Registry for this purpose) an excellent program to perform this function is "Autoruns" (available from Microsoft at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspx). I don't like to use 'msconfig' because it has its own nag screen which appears at startup after you make changes.

2. Run the program as a scheduled task

Click on Administrative Tools->Task Scheduler Expand the folders in the left hand pane (Task Scheduler Library). To add a new folder, highlight a folder (example Windows) and click on Actions->New Folder and give it a name.

In the right hand pane or in Actions, click on Create Basic Task (if you are an advanced user you may click on Create Task, which offers considerably more control over the task).

In the dialog box, enter a name and description, if you want a reminder, and click Next Enter a trigger, in the case of startup click the radio button 'when the computer starts' and click Next Click the radio button 'start a program' and click Next. Enter the full path name of the program or browse to find the .exe file, click on it and click Next.

TIP: If you want to enter an argument and don't know what it might be, right click on the program desktop shortcut and select 'Properties'. The argument will be shown in the 'target' block.

The final screen will show the details of the task. Click on finish and you are done.
